Strippers Are Employees

Strippers have been federally recognized as employees by the National Labor Relations Board. Read more here. This is why the majority of class action law suits by strippers against their clubs are settled out of court.

Strippers have been misclassified as independent contractors for a few decades now. Did you know that strippers used to get paid to come to work? And they kept all of their tips. In California, the AB5 law was put into place after the Dynamex case brought to light the exploitation of workers via misclassification.

Strippers United, once in favor of this law because of the potential good that came with it, but now we have mixed views. This is because AB5 has caused a myriad of issues, including increased discrimination of Black, Indigenous and People of Color members. Strip club owners took advantage of the change and increased house fees and other fees and continue to spread misinformation.

Strippers United did not lobby for this law. We did however speak directly to law makers and pleaded with them to pay attention to strippers, a group of workers already facing extreme exploitation. They did not do much to help.

All strippers have the right to unionize, and that is ultimately what we strive for. For strippers to unite and demand better working conditions. To unite however feels best to you and your colleagues, whether it’s as a union or an organized group. Our goal is for you to be happy, healthy and safe.

Strippers United is a small 501c3 non-profit. Almost all of our members are volunteers and work for free. Thank you for your continued patience as we grow our resource section.
